Levin-Weinstein Joining Nickell in 2012
According to the Bridge Winners site, I read the following (though I can’t swear to its authenticity):
For almost twenty years the regular roster of the NICKELL team has read like a “Who’s Who” of bridge: Freeman, Hamman, Wolff, Meckstroth, Rodwell, Soloway, Zia, and Katz. Led by captain Nick Nickell, the team’s perennial success has led to the expectation that the road to any championship goes through them.
Beginning with the 2012 Spingold, Bobby Levin and Steve Weinstein will be joining the NICKELL team. Along with Nickell/Katz and Meckstroth/Rodwell, they will seek to continue the NICKELL legacy for years to come.
There follows on their site 14 comments (including mine) that you may be interesting in reading.
I think this “Nickell legacy” is a bit premature. Let’s not jump the gun!
You’ve got two established twosomes now (Meckwell and Levin/Weinstein). It all depends how well the newest partnership of Nick and Ralph develop which only began after the sad and untimely death of Dickie Freeman. Zia and Hamman are both super players but perhaps their systems and views of the game did not mesh as well as originally anticipated. I guarantee they will both move on — perhaps with different partners or even together.
After Edgar’s death, Norman wanted to throw in the towel. I wouldn’t hear of it, convincing him that when God blesses one with such a talent, it is sacrilege not to continue to play in top flight competition. He soon began (and enjoyed) playing with Eddie Kantar but they were each too busy to devote the hours necessary for a serious partnership at that time in their careers. C’est la vie.
Soon after Norman passed on. Eddie is overwhelmed still doing all the things he does best to the benefit of the entire bridge scene. You can’t pick up a magazine or news letter without seeing his name or column emblazoned somewhere. Whatta guy!
