MYSTERIOUS BRIDGE FLIGHT

 PAN AM PLANE

If you look closely you can see the passengers about to board a Pan American World Airlines plane.   It is obviously bound for an important bridge clash – but  the destination and year are a mystery.  However, I spotted some familiar faces.  On the far left is a very young Alfie Sheinwold.  Moving to the right, the fifth individual is easily recognizable as the handsome, debonair Johnny Crawford and after passing over the two gentlemen shaking hands is unquestionably Sidney Silodor.  Neither Bobby nor I have a clue as to the others and hopefully one of you veterans out there can identify them for us.   Help!!!!

Judy,

I’m an old timer and I too would have recognized Alfie, Johnny and Sidney — but uncertain of the others. Could the one in the dark suit shaking hands be Charlie Goren?

Hi Carol:

You could be right and it makes sense as Sidney and Charlie had played on international teams together and this looks like an intercontinental flight.

Judy –

I wonder if the hand-shaker facing the camera is Juan Trippe, circa 1953 – 5. There are many pix of him on the web but most are from much earlier or later. The one that seemed to suggest it is here about 10 pix down the page):

This photo continues to intrigue me.

I still think the two people shaking hands with John Crawford and (maybe) Goren are likely senior corporate Pan AM executives. If so, that might make the second women from the left probably the wife of the man shaking John Crawford’s hand. If that really is Goren, then the man shaking his hand would be the most-senior Pan AM person present, which also suggests he could be Juan Trippe.

The placement of the others to the far right in the pic suggests that those two men may also be Pan Am folk, though lesser in corporate rank than the two in the middle shaking hands. That would account for why you and your “other source” cannot recognize them.

Is that Sheinwold’s wife beside him? I note that the two of them have their arms linked as they hold hands. Can you estimate the year any closer from her appearance? Maybe that would allow a better guess of what team the bridge folk were on.

Hi Jim 2:

Sorry, I neglected your comments. They got lost in the shuffle. I, too, think it could be Goren — but not certain. I never heard of Juan Trippe, but you may well be right.

As far as the gal on Alfie’s arm, at first I suspected it was one of his wives (possibly Patsy Adler) but I don’t remember her with light hair. However, who else’s arm would he be hanging on to?

The photograph has to be from the fifties as I met Sidney Silodor in the early sixties and he looks much younger than when we were first introduced. It is sad that whomever passed on the pictures to Norman and me never identified them by year or individual. Life would have been so much easier — and more interesting.

Thanks for checking in.

Cheers,

Judy

Judy –

Juan Trippe was the founder of Pan AM, and would have been the President/CEO in the early ’50s.

Just guessing here, but the men on the far right could be Max Manchester and Col. Russell Baldwin c.1961

Thanks Tracey:

I have tried to research old pictures but with singular lack of success. The unrecognizable faces were a wee bit before my time. Thanks for your input.
